Babywork

A collaborative exhibition by Hannah Katherine & Josephine

Colorful abstract painting of hot air balloons flying over mountains with a sunset in the background.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Work that begins as play

“Babywork” was a bit of internal family jargon we made up during Josie’s early years. It refers to the serious business of play, creation, and imagination during childhood. “Don’t interrupt, she’s doing her babywork,” is a phrase you might often hear. Over time, it became shorthand for everything related to creative focus and flow. That’s why the name fit perfectly with this exhibit.

Each piece is developed slowly through a process of layered and co-creative efforts between mother and daughter. Josie builds the luminous backgrounds and then hands the canvases to me to sketch out our ideas. Should there be 1 or 2 bunnies in this balloon? Maybe we could tie a bunch of balloons to the bunnies like they’re parachuting in? We then work together to bring the ideas to life. The show celebrates creative whimsy as both a developmental process and a source of joy and connection. The paintings offer a unique window into the magic of childhood and the experience of creating new worlds to inhabit together.

Last year we developed a scavenger hunt activity to encourage “slow looking” for a fundraising exhibition at Baltimore Pediatric Dentistry. The addition of the activity created such a positive impact, we decided to bring it with us to Children’s National.

Thank you for your interest in Bon Voyage. The original painting has been acquired and is now permanently displayed in a private pediatric dental office.

Created as part of the collaborative Babywork series by artist Hannah Katherine and her daughter, Josephine, Bon Voyage celebrates adventure, imagination, and the courage to set out toward something new. The painting follows a group of rabbit travelers as they embark on a whimsical journey through a dreamlike landscape shaped by curiosity and wonder.

Wherever You Are is a collaborative painting by artist Hannah Katherine and her daughter, Josephine, created as part of their ongoing Babywork series.

The Story

The painting began with a simple idea: what if the party isn't a place at all?

In this dreamlike scene, friends drift toward a brightly lit balloon suspended in a sky of color and possibility. Rather than traveling to a destination, they are traveling to one another. The gathering itself becomes the celebration.

Inspired by the way children often prioritize connection over location, Wherever You Are reflects the belief that belonging is something we create together. The people we love can transform an ordinary place into something magical simply by being there.

Created through a process of shared storytelling and layered mark-making, the painting invites viewers to consider where joy truly lives: not in a destination, but in the company we keep.

Liminal Drift is a collaborative painting by artist Hannah Katherine and her daughter, Josephine, created as part of their ongoing Babywork series.

The Story

Suspended between earth and sky, a collection of hot air balloons emerges through layers of cloud and atmosphere, drifting through a space that feels both familiar and unknowable. The painting explores the experience of existing within a threshold. A quiet place where one chapter has ended and another has not yet fully begun.

Throughout the composition, blue herons appear as subtle guides. They serve as metaphors for the people, instincts, opportunities, and moments of grace that pull us forward when the path ahead is unclear. Though the destination remains hidden, we are rarely navigating alone.

Children often move through uncertainty differently than adults. Rather than demanding immediate answers, they remain open to discovery. In Liminal Drift, the balloons float through shifting skies with a sense of trust, allowing curiosity rather than certainty to lead the way.

Created through a process of shared storytelling and layered mark-making, the painting invites viewers to consider the transitions that shape their lives and the guides that have helped carry them through. It is a reflection on becoming, on movement, and on finding direction while resting within the unknown.

In the Clouds is a collaborative painting by artist Hannah Katherine and her daughter, Josephine, created as part of their ongoing Babywork series.

The Story

Floating high above the landscape, a pair of hot air balloons drifts through a sky filled with color, movement, and possibility. Rabbits travel alongside them, navigating a world where gravity feels optional and imagination shapes the path forward.

The painting explores the experience of being completely immersed in wonder. The phrase "in the clouds" is often used to describe distraction or daydreaming, but here it becomes an invitation. The clouds are not something to escape from. They are a place of curiosity, creativity, and discovery.

Created through a process of shared storytelling and layered mark-making, In the Clouds celebrates the freedom to imagine what might exist beyond the horizon. The balloons become vessels of exploration, carrying their passengers through a landscape where possibility feels endless and every direction offers something new to discover.

Filled with luminous color and atmospheric depth, the painting invites viewers to reconnect with the playful optimism that often comes so naturally in childhood.

Golden Hour is a collaborative painting by artist Hannah Katherine and her daughter, Josephine, created as part of their ongoing Babywork series.

The Story

Suspended between day and night, a hot air balloon drifts through a sky illuminated by the soft glow of evening light. Below, a small rabbit catches the wind with a striped kite, following close behind as the journey unfolds.

The painting reflects on the moments when life feels full of possibility. Like the golden hour itself, these experiences are often brief and difficult to hold onto. They arrive unexpectedly, inviting us to slow down, pay attention, and appreciate the beauty of the present moment.

Created through a process of shared storytelling and layered mark-making, Golden Hour explores themes of wonder, trust, and adventure. The balloon represents the call toward something new, while the rabbit reminds us that courage is not the absence of uncertainty. Sometimes it is simply the willingness to follow where curiosity leads.

Filled with luminous color and dreamlike atmosphere, the painting celebrates the fleeting moments that stay with us long after they have passed.
